01The game

Players: Two minimum, a pitcher and a batter. Ten maximum, five to a side.
Full teams: Catcher, pitcher, double, triple and home run area fielders. Fielders stay in their area. No catcher? A lawn chair behind the plate works as the strike zone.
Picking sides: Captains choose players alternately. Bat in order: pitcher, catcher, double, triple, home run fielder.
Innings: Three outs retire a side. Three to nine innings a game, both sides bat for a full inning. Tied? Play extra innings.

02The field

Size: At least 20 ft wide at the home run markers (about 8 paces) and about 60 ft long (about 23 paces).
Single: Markers about 24 ft from home plate on the foul line.
Double: Markers about 20 ft behind the single markers.
Triple & home run: Triple markers 20 ft behind the doubles. Anything past them and not caught is a home run.

03Outs

Strikeout: Only on a swing. Foul tips count as strikes for the first two strikes only.
Fly ball: Any fly ball caught, fair or foul.
Ground ball: A ground ball caught while still moving in fair territory.
Not an out: A foul tip caught behind the batter's box.

04Scoring

Batter: Earns 1 base on a single, 2 on a double, 3 on a triple.
Runner on 1st: Moves up 1 base on a single, 2 on a double, scores on a triple.
Runner on 2nd: Scores on a single, double or triple.
Runner on 3rd: Scores on any hit.
